Office Tour!

I had intended to write a review post today over cruelty-free skin care products, but I left one of the products at work so…new plan! I’m inviting you into my home office, where all the magic happens. I’ve been meaning to do a post like this forever, then I forgot about it, then Paper Fury did a post on it and I was like oh-yeah-I-need-to-do-that, then I forgot about it again, and now here we are. 😄

For our first year of marriage, Deacon and I lived in a one-bedroom apartment. We foolishly thought it would be enough space for us. I didn’t have my desk then, so I mostly just blogged and did homework on our bed. We started searching for a new place so we could adopt a dog and found this three-bedroom house for rent. It’s not as nice as our apartment was, but we each get our own office, which is important for us because we are both pretty introverted and need our own space.

My office is probably my favorite place to be in the world. The only downside is that it doesn’t get very good heating/cooling, so I always have to have fans and/or blankets nearby. And it has horrible lighting. But after we moved in, I was able to get another book shelf and have my desk (which I’ve had ever since I was like 10 years old) brought over from my parents’ house.
~~~
The Bookshelves
So when you first come in, my bookshelves are on the left. The one on the left has five shelves (and is very poorly made. I’ll replace it someday), and the one on the right has an upper cabinet where I keep our wedding memorabilia and fine china, and the bottom is where I keep all my other books (which is a hot mess and will not be displayed to the public).
The Window Wall
Then across the room, you’ll see the wall with the window. This is where I keep postcards mailed to me (yes I do have friends and yes we send mail sometimes) and my necklaces. I’m not sure where I got the idea to hang the necklaces on my wall, but I didn’t have anything else to put there. And I don’t have anywhere else to put my necklaces. So it seemed logical.
To the left you have my closet (which is also a hot mess). Our house is weird and the master closet is actually in the first bedroom (Deacon’s office) instead of the largest bedroom (where we sleep), so we just keep our clothes in our offices. And apparently my scarf collection is out of control.
The Desk & Accessories
Like I said, I’ve had this desk ever since I was like 10 years old. It kind of holds a special place in my heart. I got my desktop about a year and a half ago and absolutely love it. I had just been working on my laptop before then, and I can’t tell you how much better it is to have a decent sized monitor and more computing power. I also just got a brand new keyboard that is pretty and wonderful, but I got it after I took these pictures.  🙄
A few other things you see:
  • Bird feeder right out side the window so I can be constantly distracted by birds and squirrels
  • Sylvia Plath quote
  • Dry-erase board that I hardly ever use
  • Bird cage clock
  • Prints from CosmicPrint (I just bought JPEG files and printed myself, then put in document frames because I accidentally bought 8.5 x 11 photo paper? 😆)
  • Appa plush
  • Crochet flowers
  • Sticky note holder that looks like a Polaroid camera
  • Rock salt candle holder that does not work very well
  • More books that I need to read
  • (bottom shelf, not visible) library books
Then on the other side of the room, you have my camera gear (I’ve been meaning to work out a better storage system), file cabinet, office supplies drawer, Star Wars trivial pursuit, and a timeline for my NaNoWriMo 2015 plot. To the left is a door that leads to our furnace, which is why the room is always so hot.
And there you have it! I’ll eventually decorate the wall above my NaNoWriMo timeline, and I wish I could fit a comfy chair somewhere, but other than that this room is pretty much my dream come true.
    I love this and I’m jealous! We just moved and we’re still getting settled and my books are just piled in the floor waiting for me to sit down and arrange my bookshelf.
      I’m definitely starting to run out of space for my books. I’ve had to get rid of a few and I’m trying to start buying more ebooks. But it’s hard. Buying new, physical books is a sort of addiction.
      I hope your move goes well! I know how stressful it can be to get a new place organized. We’ve been here for over two years and still have some things in boxes…
    Love your office tour! Thanks for sharing! And I have one of those Polaroid sticky note holders, too!
      Thanks! I’m a bit of a sticky note fiend.
    Is it weird that I love seeing people’s office spaces? I envy your personal space! And book space, we have a good portion of our books in a storage unit, so I’m just going to live vicariously through this post. 😉
      The bad thing is that now I’m attached to my office space and I know we probably won’t be able to afford three bedrooms if we move anywhere else. But I’m enjoying it while it lasts!
