NaNoWriMo 2017 // Complete

Ah, here we are again. Another December 1st, another completed month of noveling.

This year was…odd. I had more time to write than I’ve ever had (perks of no longer being a student), so I made it my personal goal to write something every day. Not necessarily meet the target word count for the day, but at least write a little bit every day to avoid what happened last year, where I would go days without writing and ended up having to write 15,000 words in the last four days. Not a situation you want to get into if you can help it.

The writing came easily to me this year, more more easily than last year…but this novel is without a doubt the worst thing I’ve ever written. It will never see the light of day. Now that the first draft is done, it’s going to be shoved in the corner of my computer’s archives. No, I will not let you read it. It’s awful.

I think I just had to focus more on quantity than quality this year…to the point that there was really no substance there. I was trying to write a cute college romance, but there wasn’t much of a plot to drive the story, so it ended up being more of a character study than anything. The problem is that I still don’t feel like I know my characters. Everything is very one-dimensional, my description is bad, the dialogue is bad, and there’s not really a plot.

I’m thinking that if I come up with a decent plot down the road, I can maybe recycle the characters and some parts of their story, but I don’t think that will be happening any time soon. That said, I don’t think this month of writing was a waste of time. I think any time you write anything, good or bad, progress is being made. I can maybe shape a good story out of this awful one, but if I don’t, at least I learned things along the way (for example: leave cute college romances to Rainbow Rowell).

Here are some major highlights from the month:

  • I wrote something every day.
  • I wrote more words than I ever have during NaNoWriMo.
  • I actually got to the end of my novel for the first time!

And now that it’s over, it’s time to start planning more blog posts! It’s been silent here for the past two weeks, and I’m dying to get back to my normal schedule.
