October 2017 Wrap-Up

– We saw John and Hank on tour! I wrote a whole post about it if you want to know more, but basically I think it was the best event I’ve ever attended in my life.

– Cait @ Paper Fury is releasing a book! With her face! and name! and I don’t know a lot about it but you should go congratulate her because she’s been trying to get this thing published for eons.

– I’m doing a workshop about Grammarly at work in a few weeks and need your feedback. If you’ve used Grammarly, leave me a comment about your experience. 🙂

– I was sorted into Thunderbird for IlvermornyWhich, to be honest, seems like the only Ilvermorny house worth being in.

– NaNoWriMo starts today. I’ve only written 200 words and basically have no plot to go on…but it’ll be fun. Or something. Learn a bit about my novel here. And follow my NaNo progress @ mixedmargins.

– I think I figured out why people are afraid of the dark. Or at least why it freaks me out so much. We have more rods in our peripheral vision and more cones in our central vision. Our peripheral vision isn’t good at detecting details or color, but the rods are more sensitive to light, meaning that in the dark, you can see things in your peripheral vision that you can’t see when looking at it directly. You’ve probably noticed this when looking at stars in the night sky. So in the dark, we can see outlines of things in the corner of our eyes, but those things disappear when you look at them directly.

– This video of a bunny jumping in leaves is my everything.

– Harry had to participate in the Triwizard Tournament because Crouch was under the Imperius curse. The book kind of makes that clear, but I still find that a lot of people don’t make the connection that Crouch was under the curse for the entire time after the Triwizard Tournament. It isn’t really shown in the movie, which might be why people are always confused.

– Why Thackery Binx? WHY IS IT NOT ZACHARY.

– Do Pokemon choose to be caught? My friend Korey and I had a pretty in-depth Twitter discussion about this a few weeks ago. I’ve always been under the impression that a Pokemon has to allow itself to be caught unless you’re using a Master Ball, and thus Pokemon are at least somewhat autonomous. I think it’s supposed to be a symbiotic relationship, though Korey and I kind of came to the conclusion that humans tend to pollute it with their dominance.

– I love this video about time travel in film

rex report

We finally got to let Rex run around without his leash! We don’t have a fenced-in yard or dog park nearby, so we’ve never had Rex outside without his leash before. But earlier this year, the city put up fences for a practice ball field in the middle of the park. There are no-dog signs on the fields of the main part of the sports complex, but there are no signs on this field, and we’ve seen people take their dogs in there before. And there are doors so that the area is completely enclosed.

So I took Rex in when nobody else was there and dropped his leash while we were walking to test how he would do. He kept walking beside as usual, but was having trouble walking while dragging his leash. So I unclipped it from him. He looked at me with a big smile on his face for a second, then started bouncing around like the happiest pup in the world. I had to call out a few times to keep him from running too much (bad on his joints), but overall he did really, really well. He listened and stopped every time I called out to him, and would stop and wait for me if he got too far ahead. So I’m looking forward to taking him here to run around more often. He definitely deserves a bit of outdoor freedom every now and then. (I just hope they keep it dog-friendly.)
