The prompt today is to list your top ten favorite reads of the year, but I’m changing it a little bit. I want to wait until December is over and do a best-books list at the very end. Instead, I’m going to be listing the best books I read for the second half of the year. If you remember, I did a post back in June for the best books I had read for the first half of the year. So this list is for everything that came after that post, with no repeats. It seems I had better luck finding good books in the first part of the year…but I’ve still read some good things since then.
Today I’m linking up with The Broke and the Bookish for a Top Ten Tuesday!
This week’s theme: Top Ten Favorite Books of 2017
My theme: Top 5 Books I Read for the Last Half of 2017
5) Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness // Susannah Cahalan
I don’t usually read nonfiction, but I saw this on Audible’s $5 sale and I remembered seeing a good review of it on Youtube, so I gave it a shot. It was actually really fascinating. It’s about a woman who suffers a mental breakdown and psychosis out of nowhere, and the subsequent struggle to find the correct diagnosis.
4) Saga, Vol. 6 // Brian K. Vaughan & Fiona Staples
I read every volume of Saga that is currently out (I’m anxiously awaiting Vol. 8 in January), and this one was my favorite. Something about it just got me. I think out of all the books I’ve read this year, I had the biggest emotional response to this one.
3) Ready Player One // Ernest Cline
I’m not a huge 80s fan and I’m not a huge gamer, but this one was still really enjoyable. I didn’t want to stop listening to it, and I was kind of sad once I finished because I wanted to stay with the characters.
2) Turtles All the Way Down // John Green
I didn’t have super high hopes going into this, but I was pretty happy with the way it turned out. Honestly, if you stripped away the entire plot and only gave us a book of Aza’s thoughts, it would be even better. Being inside the head of someone suffering from OCD was fascinating and at times heartbreaking. You can see my review here.
1) Eliza and Her Monsters // Francesca Zappia
The best book I’ve read all year, hands down. I could barely set it down at all. This is the type of book that makes you stay up late into the night reading even though you have to work the next day. I was so blown away by it, especially since I was pretty meh with the author’s previous book, Made You Up. You can read my full review here.
The Rest of Us Just Live Here // Patrick Ness
I really loved most of this, but the last 20% fell really flat, so it didn’t quite make the list.
The Girl with All the Gifts // M. R. Carey
I am currently reading this and it is super great so far, but it didn’t make the list because I’m only halfway through. 🙂
currently listening to // The Girl with All the Gifts by M. R. Carey
